Seb: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga – sorry but I don’t get it.  Unable to log onto myspace without hitting her fucking drop down banner advert, you can imagine I had high expectations.  So I decided to have a listen to her myspace page.  To make sure I was ready to be blown away, I got myself ready, had a shower, put my bestest electro t-shirt on, tucked my jeans into my high tops and got myself comfortable in my favourite listening chair.  Having finally checked her out I can confirm she is utter toss.

It never fails to amaze me how record labels get a production team to produce some average electro/hip pop beats, hire someone to sing over the top, give them a cool image and then introduce this ‘artist’ as new young ‘talent’.  I can’t say I blame them because the general public fall for the same trick time after time.

Gaga’s PR team are doing a fine job touting her as this cool new alternative girl whilst she is anything but.  A friend compared her to Katy Perry but at least Perry doesn’t make out to be something she’s not.  Actually, Perry has better tunes too – I Kissed a Girl certainly was catchy, which is more than I can say for most of Gaga’s utterly forgetable songs.

It interested me to find out that Lets Dance was co-written with none other than slick RnB popster ‘Akon’.  Sorry love but when you’ve got Akon writing your tunes you need to have a serious word with yourself (and perhaps your label?).  Most of Gaga’s tracks have been written by Pop production whizz ‘Red One’ – nothing wrong with that except Gaga’s myspace is claiming ‘words and music by Lady Gaga’.  The scamps.

I’m not going to go on and on about it but her video just came on tv and she inspired me to get writing.  I’ll leave you with some of Lady G’s most poetic lyrics.  Something to ponder over during your day and unlock the depths of your soul…

Boys Boys Boys, we like boys in cars, Boys Boys Boys, we love them.

Lets have some fun, this beat is sick.

Cause I’m bluffin with my muffin.

With some retro sneakers, lets go see the Killers

Cherry Cherry boom boom.

Much love.  Seb x

Acoustic Ladyland, Ground Dust & Plugs record live for DCR

On Thursday February 19 Bardens Boudoir & Broken Yolk come together for a live spectacular all to be recorded exclusively for DCR.

The bands on the night are:

Acoustic Ladyland

This band combine dark grooves and jazz tinged backing with multi styled vocals, to dance or not to dance, well maybe just stand at the back and nod your head like a pleb, CHECKIT: http://www.myspace.com/acousticladylandmusic

“One of London’s most consistently jaw-dropping live acts… they’re on blistering, beautiful form” Evening Standard.
“You are swept up not only by the expertise but also in the sheer joyous physicality of Acoustic Ladyland” 4/5 The Times.
“Fierce intelligence meets musical fire” 4/5 The Independent.
“Absolutely thrilling… a fantastic triumph… be prepared for the ride of your life… a bewildering and scintillating album which transcends any outdated jazz traditions” Play Music.
“Acoustic Ladyland are a brilliantly refreshing rock band” Metro.

Plugs

A deep understanding of electronica stands alongside the ability not to let go of pop sensibilities and melody, Plugs are a band snapping at the undercurrent of any scene those little pricks fancy today, a worthy worthy support:http://www.myspace.com/plugsmusic

Ground Dust

“GROUND DUST” are a five piece North London based band comprising of highly accomplished songwriter/musicians Nick Stephenson, Mark Stephenson, Richard Groves (and driving it all their fantastic rhythm section) Si Hadwin and Joe Brooks.
With local St. Albans fame came big heads and pretentious ideas, coke, death, general nudity and then finally some excellent tunes that got people dancing and using their brains as well. A few years on the band have an incredible fusion of sounds and unmissable live energy: http://www.myspace.com/grounddust

No Country still the very best

No Country for Old Men

With this years BAFTA’s still very fresh in the mind I thought lets hope the winners are repeated for The Oscars, but they don’t mean everything, how Ben Kingsley never won for Don Logan is beyond me, well beyond. But it does bring back memories of this film, I watched it about ten times in quick succession, which either means it’s very good or I’m a dick.

The best time I’ve seen it was at Glastonbury last year, on my own, 4 a.m in a field. Then with such a colossal sound system you can really appreciate the tension, the lack of music allows the sound design to ebb and flow between silence and intense gun fights, but the sound is nothing without an array of actors at their top of their game. If you like the film read the book, the film is incredible, Cormac McCarty’s book is better.

As for the ending, it’s how the book ends, you can’t argue with McCarthy and why should all questions be answered ? Doesn’t that make it better next time ?

Stop sleeping on the tube, take that book, you won’t look back…………

Zombie-Zombie & The Thing

This is a wonderful tribute to John  Carpenter’s remake of the classic horror film ‘The Thing’, one of the few films to be remade and better the original, really why do most of them bother?

It runs to the music of Parisian electro duo Zombie-Zombie’s track ‘Driving this road until death‘, it was ‘twittered’ to me by the wonderful Graham Linehan.

Turn the lights down, light up a cigar and savour what you have……….
